Strawberry seeds

Before Planting: Bare-root strawberry plants can be planted at any time. Strawberry seeds, however, should be started indoors to ensure they’re ready to thrive during their normal growing season. To boost the chances of successful germination, stratify the seeds first. Simply place them in a sealed envelope or plastic bag and store them in the refrigerator for about a month.

Planting: For strawberry seeds, sow them thinly 8 to 10 weeks before the last frost in a fine, soilless mix. Gently press the seeds into the moist mixture and keep them consistently damp until seedlings emerge in 2 to 3 weeks. Maintain a soil temperature of 60°F. Once true leaves appear, transplant them into plug trays. Move them outdoors after the last frost, spacing them about 1 foot apart. Strawberries tolerate partial shade but prefer moist soil. For bare-root strawberries, healthy root systems will arrive fresh and ready to plant. It’s crucial to plant them within a few days to prevent the roots from drying out. If immediate planting isn’t possible, store the roots at 28-35°F to keep them dormant. Strawberries can be planted in the ground, containers, or hanging baskets—they’re highly adaptable and grow well across all U.S. states. Mulching with straw, pine needles, or plastic is beneficial. They thrive in nutrient-rich soil with a pH of 6 to 6.5.

Watering: Provide strawberries with at least 1 inch of water per week.

Fertilizing: Begin fertilizing while seedlings are still indoors. Use liquid seaweed fertilizer every two weeks during the first month of growth.

Days to Maturity: Strawberries are ready to harvest as soon as they turn red.

Harvesting: When ripe, snip the strawberries off at the stem—avoid pulling them. Unwashed strawberries can be stored in the refrigerator for 3 to 5 days.

Tips: Harvested strawberries should feel slightly firm to the touch but still yield gently when pressed.
